As the Youth Performance Director of Earth Guardians, twelve-year-old Itzcuauhtli Martinez has performed eco hip-hop at events across the world, spoken in front of the United Nations, and given countless environmental presentations to schools across the United States.
Itzcuauhtli has a gift for writing and performing lyrics that educate and inspire all generations into positive action to care for the Earth. He has also worked extensively on local campaigns to get pesticides out of parks, regulate coal ash, and place a moratorium on fracking. His work has been featured on PBS and the HBO series "Saving My Tomorrow."
Sign the Climate Leadership Pledge
Sign the Pledge to be a Climate Leader in solidarity with Itzcuauhti and thousands more who are stepping up as leaders in the global movement for a healthy and sustainable planet for us and future generations. Wear a green wristband in solidarity with this pledge and post photos using the hashtag #SilenceIntoAction.
Tired of being ignored by world leaders, Itzcuauhtli went on a 45-day silent strike for climate action and became inspired to collect more than one million signatures from youth around the world to deliver to United Nations leaders when they convene in Paris in December of 2015 for the climate talks. Upon ending his silent strike, more than one and a half million engaged in his message and over 5,000 people pledged to go silent for a day in support of climate action.
Over the course of 2015 Itzcuauhtli is holding events and actions, including a "Power without Power" event that will demonstrate that youth possess an incredible amount of power and influence. At the same time, he will be giving speeches and presentations across the country and in Uganda and Europe to inspire other youth to sign the pledge, commit to be climate leaders, and help deliver it to the COP21.
